If you go counterclockwise, camp at Beatty Lake (only 4 sites) as it's at the top of the slope and you'll have more time to rest your weary legs after a tough battle. Need to Know: The Three Forks hot springs and much of the riverbank leading upstream for the campground are on unmarked private land. Make sure here to descend to the trail that contours around the lake and don’t continue along the route to Three Isle Lake, although this is also a great backpack option. Bass Lake offers a beach and boat ramp. It is passable, but plan for extra time and keep your bags light. I would recommend this trail to everyone the views you get at both continental devides is spectacular, if doing I would suggest going clockwise as when you go past Beaty lake you follow a creek bed down and the scree slope trail is easy to navigate clockwise it’s easy to loose the trail and makes for more difficulty. The AllTrails map, my recording, and the maps on the trail all give different mileage so I have no idea how far it is between each campsite. 300ft. The hike up to Three Isle was pretty dry. There were a few groups the last few days that made the same call. Some cut down trees/fallen trees along the way but nothing that changes the trail drastically. The closest access is at North Interlakes Day Use Area. Has anyone instead picked a perhaps safer line down through larger rocks under the rock wall? It isn't too far (under 7 km) or too steep and it puts you in easy range of Three Isle Lake and the South Kananaskis Pass. Backpacking loop with amazing views! Some areas are hip deep. Give it a go. Tip: To get to the top of the Headwall with less effort, stash your backpack in a locker at the Forks. We passed 3 other groups doing the loop. My suggestion is clockwise to Three Isle first and then make your way to Turbine through Beatty lake, the descent to the scree slope and the scree slope are something I would rather not do towards the end of the longer second day. The scree slope was steep and very narrow at some parts, but doable and had great views (even for me, not very experienced with scree and very afraid of heights). The original floodplain communities of this area were severely impacted by diking and draining for agricultural uses decades ago. Up at 6:30 the second day started with an early morning breakfast, tales of the evening and anxious discussion of the days adventure. The hike up to Turbine was really nice, quite the elevation gain in the first hour or so, then levelled out to lots of meadow breaks and small stream crossings (with bridges). Afterward I hiked a short distance to see a ski training hut. That night it rained and was very cold. Trails are fairly clear so there was no getting lost. The hike down was probably 6 hours or so... Again stopping alot. We did two nights, one at forks, which took us 2 hours to get too, then from forks to Turbine Canyon which took us 7 hours, granted I'm not that fit and for my first back country camping, I was super slow with my extra gear. The views are beautiful, the trek is long but the results are 100% worth it! There are 16 campsites scattered throughout the forest by the lake and the campground is equipped with an outhouse and secure food storage lockers. This is a moderate loop trail to Park Patrol Cabin in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. We did this in 3 days, 2 nights at the end of July. 40 and south on Kananaskis Lakes Trail. The last day back to Upper Lake was downhill and easy. The Three Isle Lake trail continues. The next morning we got about 1km out towards the BC border and decided to turn back. You could also camp at Three Isle Lake rather than Beatty Lake if you prefer. Stay together, make noise and if one is seen, veer through the bush to keep clear and avoid any unpleasantness. Visitors to Forks Campground have limited views of the lake but can easily walk to its shore and beach for swimming and relaxing in the mountain air.
